Life Code Findings Put Income Protection Claims Back Under the Microscope

Clear records, policy knowledge and early communication remain vital for Australians relying on cover

The latest industry attention on Life Insurance Code compliance is another reminder that income protection insurance is not just about having a policy in place.
For working Australians, the real test comes when illness or injury interrupts earnings and a claim needs to move from paperwork to practical financial support.

Recent compliance commentary across the life insurance sector has again pointed to familiar pressure points: claim timeframes, communication quality, requests for information, complaint handling and support for customers experiencing vulnerability. While these issues apply across life insurance more broadly, they are especially important for income protection because benefits are usually paid monthly and are often needed to cover rent, mortgage payments, groceries, utilities and family expenses while a person is unable to work.

This is an extension of the broader claims handling conversation already affecting the sector. The message for policyholders is practical rather than alarmist. Delays and disputes can happen, but many problems are easier to manage when customers understand what their insurer is likely to ask for and keep organised records from the beginning.

For income protection claims, evidence commonly includes medical certificates, specialist reports, employment details, income records and information about work duties. Self-employed workers may also need to provide business financials, tax records or accountant-prepared material to establish pre-disability income. People with cover through super should also check whether the trustee, insurer or both will be involved, as this can affect the path a claim takes. The distinction between personal cover and income protection inside superannuation can matter at claim time.

The broader lesson is that policy wording remains central. Waiting periods, benefit periods, disability definitions, offsets, exclusions and ongoing assessment rules can all influence how a claim is assessed. A policyholder who assumes income protection automatically pays whenever they are unwell may be surprised to learn that the insurer must still assess whether the policy definition has been met and whether the required evidence supports the claim.

Australians reviewing their cover should ask a few simple questions: What income figure would be used if I claimed today? How long would I need to be off work before benefits start? What payments could reduce my benefit? Who do I contact if my claim is delayed? These checks can make the claims process less stressful if a health setback occurs.

For insurers and super funds, the continuing compliance focus reinforces the need for plain communication, timely requests for information and fair treatment of people who may already be under financial and medical strain. For policyholders, it is a timely prompt to read the details before they are needed.
