What Stronger Insurer Results Could Mean for SMEs

Better market conditions do not remove the need for careful cover reviews

What Stronger Insurer Results Could Mean for SMEs?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Recent industry reporting on APRA’s latest general insurance performance data points to a healthier operating environment for Australian insurers.
Underwriting results have improved, investment income has supported profitability, and the sector remains strongly capitalised.
For small and medium-sized businesses, the headline is encouraging, but it should not be read as a simple promise of cheaper cover across every policy class.

The commercial insurance market is still being shaped by two competing forces. On one side, stronger insurer performance can increase appetite for selected risks, encourage competition and give businesses more room to compare options. On the other, claims inflation, natural catastrophe exposure, supply chain repair costs and litigation trends continue to influence pricing, particularly for property, liability and professional risks.

This is an extension of the softer market conditions seen earlier in the year, where improved capacity created more favourable buying conditions in parts of the market. The difference now is that the latest insurer performance data gives business owners another reason to review whether their current arrangements are still fit for purpose, rather than simply accepting last year’s renewal terms.

For SMEs, the practical opportunity is not only about premium savings. A more competitive market may also make it easier to revisit limits, excesses, sub-limits, optional extensions and policy wording. That matters because a low premium can still be poor value if the cover does not respond to the risks most likely to affect cash flow.

Business owners should pay particular attention to:

  • whether commercial property sums insured reflect current rebuilding, fit-out and equipment replacement costs;
  • whether business interruption indemnity periods are long enough for a major recovery scenario;
  • whether liability limits satisfy contracts, landlords, councils or customer requirements;
  • whether cyber, management liability or professional indemnity exposures have grown as the business has changed;
  • whether exclusions or conditions have shifted at renewal.

The stronger market backdrop also highlights the importance of accurate disclosure. Insurers may be more willing to compete for well-presented risks, but they still price based on occupation, claims history, controls, revenue, locations and the quality of risk management. Businesses that can clearly explain their operations, safety procedures, cyber controls and continuity planning may be better placed when seeking terms.

A sensible next step is to estimate appropriate sums insured before renewal discussions begin. Treat any estimate as a planning tool, not personal advice, and read policy documents carefully before making changes. Stronger insurer results are positive for the market, but the best outcome for SMEs remains cover that is affordable, suitable and capable of responding when it is needed most.

BOM Website Backlash Shows Weather Data Is a Farm Risk Issue

Farmer criticism of the Bureau of Meteorology’s redesigned website is more than a technology complaint. For rural businesses, fast and familiar access to weather information can influence decisions about spraying, harvesting, moving livestock, protecting machinery and preparing for severe events. When that information becomes harder to navigate, even temporarily, the practical impact can be felt at the farm gate. - read more

Fresh industry discussion around retail crime is a timely reminder that shop insurance is not only about large-scale disasters. For many Australian retailers, the more immediate risks are break-ins, shoplifting, vandalism, smashed glass, damaged fixtures and the trading disruption that follows. These incidents may be smaller than a flood or fire, but repeated losses can still put pressure on cash flow and margins. - read more
