Insurance Complaint Trends Put Claims Preparation Back in Focus

Why clearer records, realistic limits and early action matter when something goes wrong

Insurance Complaint Trends Put Claims Preparation Back in Focus?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Fresh industry attention on Australian Financial Complaints Authority complaint trends is a timely reminder that insurance value is not only tested when a policy is bought.
For trade businesses, the real test often comes when a damaged tool trailer, public liability allegation, stolen equipment claim or storm-affected worksite needs to be resolved quickly so the next job can proceed.

Recent reporting on AFCA’s insurance workload has again highlighted familiar pressure points: claim delays, disputes about policy interpretation, disagreement over settlement amounts and frustration when customers do not understand why an insurer has asked for more information. These issues are not unique to tradies, but the impact can be sharper for sole traders and small crews because a stalled claim can mean lost income, missed deadlines and unhappy clients.

The practical message is simple: claims outcomes are often shaped before the incident happens. A policy schedule that does not reflect today’s replacement costs, vague records of tool ownership, or uncertainty about exclusions can all create problems when time matters. This is especially important as tool prices, vehicle fit-outs and materials have risen across many trades.

Tradies should take three steps from the latest complaint themes:

  • Keep a live register of tools, equipment, serial numbers, purchase receipts and photos, stored somewhere other than the ute or trailer.
  • Review policy limits, sub-limits and excesses against current replacement costs, not what the gear cost several years ago.
  • Report incidents promptly and keep a clear record of conversations, emails, photos, police reports, invoices and repair assessments.

It is also worth checking whether the policy matches the way the business actually operates. A plumber taking on larger commercial maintenance contracts, an electrician adding solar and battery work, or a carpenter hiring subcontractors may have exposures that differ from when cover was first arranged. If the business has changed, the insurance should be reviewed as well.

This development also connects with our previous coverage of the General Insurance Code review, because better communication, fairer timeframes and clearer claims handling remain central issues for small business customers. Regulation may improve processes over time, but tradies still need to control what they can: documentation, disclosure and cover adequacy.

Before renewal, it can help to estimate replacement values and liability limits so the conversation with an insurer or adviser starts from realistic numbers. For busy tradespeople, that small admin task can make a major difference when a claim lands at the worst possible moment.

A fresh round of transport safety coverage has put truck fires back on the risk agenda for Australian operators. While major crashes often attract the most attention, a vehicle fire can be just as disruptive for a business: the truck may be written off, the load may be damaged, a route may be blocked and the operator may lose income while replacement equipment is sourced. - read more

What a More Stable Income Protection Market Means for Your Pay Packet

Recent APRA life insurance performance data has given the income protection sector a cautiously positive signal: the market appears to be moving through a more stable phase after several years of product redesign, pricing pressure and closer regulatory attention. For consumers, the important point is not that cover has suddenly become simple, but that insurer sustainability and claim reliability remain central to the value of any policy. - read more

APRA’s latest life insurance performance data has put income protection back under the spotlight, with disability income products continuing to be one of the more closely watched areas of the sector. While the broader life insurance industry has been showing signs of improved stability, the update reinforces that policies designed to replace income after illness or injury remain sensitive to claims experience, pricing, and changing work and health trends. - read more

Australia’s latest severe weather preparedness messaging from the insurance sector is a timely reminder that boat owners face a different risk profile to many households. Storms, flood surge, hail, cyclonic winds and marina damage can all affect vessels well before a skipper has a chance to move them.
